As I drove the many miles for our vacation, I found myself growing increasingly sad for the lies so many people believe. Along the highway are billboards for what they call “adult entertainment.” There are more of them than I could count. I found myself upset that they were so blatant about it and upset that they called it entertainment for adults. This would imply that it is some normal event that adults are supposed to be doing. It really isn’t adult entertainment. It is cheap and self-centered experiences at the expense of someone else. It is taking another human being, valued and created in God’s image, and making them an object. That does not sound adult; it sounds immature to me.
If you want proof, look at what Jesus said. This does not sound like entertainment to me.
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.” – Matthew 5:27-30
The results of these activities are debated, but out of the heart come the things people do with their time. David in the Old Testament had this issue when he looked at Bathsheba. We are told, after all, to guard our heart above all else. There is a reason for that!
I long for a world where there is no such thing as sex trafficking, prostitution, or pornography. It just does not make sense to me how a civilized society has need to allow such filth. The standards for television are becoming less and less strict. I have a difficult time watching football with my children because of the way certain advertisers use women. Add to that my concern that more and more children are being exposed to inappropriate internet sites. I don’t know how many times I have had that conversation with someone in my office who has gotten into these things and are having a hard time getting away from it. It is destroying people! We need to wake up and teach our children right and wrong. We need to do all we can to steer them clear of the filth out there because it has been set up as something so amazing that it is hard to resist. I want my boys to understand what it means to respect another person and to respect themselves. I want them to know that while it might be normal to look with lust at a girl, it certainly isn’t what honors God. Ultimately this is about the heart anyway and our nation needs to turn to God.
